Opponents of fluoride use in Petersburg’s water and supporters of all-terrain vehicle use on Petersburg streets are both circulating petitions to get those topics on the October ballot. The Petersburg borough has certified two ordinances for signature gathering to force a vote on the topics.

Petersburg’s borough assembly Monday approved a proposed trail route from the Severson’s subdivision to Haugen Drive. The trail would be built by the Petersburg Indian Association with federal money but has run into some opposition from neighbors.

Property owners in Petersburg may have to pay more tax next year under a budget proposal being considered by the borough assembly this spring. The proposed spending plan also eliminates borough funding for mental health services and several other organizations. The assembly Monday advanced the borough budget in its first reading without any changes.

A lawsuit over the search of a home slated for demolition on Wrangell Avenue in Petersburg will not be going to trial this month. A superior court judge has dismissed the case and found that the Petersburg borough did not violate the rights of the property owners in preparing to tear down the structure.

Petersburg High School’s baseball teams had four losses and one win at home against Juneau last weekend. On Friday the Viking varsity lost 11-1 and on Saturday, 11-1 and 10-0. Petersburg’s junior varsity lost 7-1 on Friday and won 9-3 on Saturday.
