Development code could be up for assembly vote this fall

An extensive revision of Petersburg borough code on zoning and land use could be up for approval by the borough assembly as soon as next month. The new development code covers what’s allowed for land use, buildings and subdivisions. The proposal would streamline some of the borough’s approval process for permit applications. It would also create some new zoning categories for land within service area one, within the old city limits for Petersburg.

Petersburg celebrates Independence Day holiday

From hot pepper eating and giant jenga, to log rolling and street races Petersburg residents and visitors celebrated the Independence Day holiday with three days of fun, games, food and fireworks. The events were put on this year by the borough’s Parks and Recreation department, Chamber of Commerce, the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church and other organizations.

Petersburg land grant bill passes House

A bill granting over 14-thousand acres of state land to the Petersburg borough passed the Alaska House today Wednesday by a vote of 39-0.
As a newly formed borough, Petersburg is entitled to a land grant of ten percent of the available state land that hasn’t been designated for another use. The legislation grants nearly a ten-fold increase in that amount, or 14,666 acres.
