This summer’s commercial catch of Dungeness crab in Southeast Alaska looks to be down from last year, even with a strong price paid for the crab.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s preliminary harvest estimate for the summer harvest is 1.9 million pounds. A total of 198 permit holders landed crab during the season which runs June 15th through August 15th.
Petersburg High School’s cross country teams opened up their 2016 season on the road under sunny skies in Ketchikan Saturday morning. The girls team took third overall, tops among the small schools, narrowly missing second place to Thunder Mountain by just one point.

As other schools around the state are welcoming students for the new year, one school in a small village on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska will not be opening its doors. The school in Port Protection on northern Prince of Wales isn’t open this fall, because of a lack of students.

Students head back to class Monday, August 29 in Petersburg as the new school year gets underway. Enrollment numbers have increased in two of the three schools and the district welcomes several newcomers to its faculty.

The legal battle continues over a demolished home on Wrangell Avenue in Petersburg. The structure was taken down in 2014 after the borough declared it a dangerous home. The owners of the home are appealing last year’s court ruling in favor of the Petersburg borough and have filed another suit challenging borough staff visits to the property in preparation for demolition.
