Petersburg High graduates 32 in class of 2015

32 students, 24 boys and eight girls received diplomas at a commencement ceremony in the Petersburg High School gym Wednesday night. The class valedictorian was Kyle Hagerman, salutatorian Aaron Murph and the class history was presented by Shalie Dahl and Ben Zarlengo. The keynote speaker was teacher Beau Ward.

Petersburg couple invite Norwegian monarch to Alaska’s Little Norway

Petersburg residents Al and Sally Dwyer attended two events in Anchorage last week with King Harald V of Norway. The Norwegian monarch was visiting Washington state and Alaska. In Anchorage he attended a conference of oil and gas companies, toured a museum exhibit and visited the Sons of Norway lodge in Alaska’s largest city.

Petersburg assembly wonders about plan B for police building

Several members of Petersburg borough assembly this week questioned the borough’s plan for repairing or replacing the town’s failing police building and jail. Borough staff say the architects eventually will be reporting back with a cost estimate for the borough’s top capital project priority. However some assembly members want to look at scaling down the project because they don’t expect any more state grant money for construction.

Petersburg assembly shoots down farm building tax break

Petersburg’s assembly Monday voted down a property tax exemption for farm buildings. The measure would have applied only to property owners that make more than 10 percent of their income from growing plants or raising livestock. However assembly members were concerned about setting a precedent or giving the tax break to future marijuana growers.

Petersburg High baseball ends season with two losses

Petersburg High School’s baseball team wrapped up the season with two losses at the regional tournament in Juneau last week. The Vikings lost 12-0 to Thunder Mountain last Thursday and then bowed out of the tournament with a 20-0 loss to Sitka on Friday.
