More Mayfest activities on tap for Weekend

Petersburg is abuzz with celebration of Norwegian culture and local color as the 2011 Little Norway Festival is well underway. Reilly Enchants with watercolor show for Mayfest

A new show of watercolor paintings by local artist Pia Reilly opens tonight at Miele Gallery as part of the Little Norway Festival in Petersburg. There are still life portraits of flowers and forests of colorful, complex trees with flowing branches contrasted and complimented by the images of more simple, strait-backed chairs. It’s called “Enchanted” and Matt Lichtenstein stopped by Reilly’s studio for a preview.:

Cornelius takes Petersburg Through the Forest

Detailed scenes from the Tongass and elsewhere are captured with fast-drying oils on canvas in the new show from local artist Don Cornelius. “Through the Forest” is on display at Wild Celery for this week’s Little Norway festival in Petersburg starting with an artists reception Thursday night. Cornelius’s art focuses on the dramatic, natural beauty that surrounds this area along with some of the man-made features that have become part of it. He showed his latest works to Matt Lichtenstein

Friday's Mayfest schedule packed

Main Street will be lined with concessions and food booths; Vikings and Valkyries will parade through the streets on their ship, the Valhalla; other locals and visitors will show off their traditional Norwegian costumes called Bunader. All this and more is coming up as the Little Norway Festival goes full throttle on its second day, Friday, the 13th. Matt Lichtenstein asked Little Norway Festival committee co-chairs Holli Flint and Katie Corrao for a preview of Friday’s schedule.

More Local paintings, sculptures, carvings, quilt-work, photography and other pieces of art are now on display at The Clausen Memorial Museum. The Little Norway Art show is an annual tradition and can be viewed every day of the festival. Matt Lichtenstein stopped by to take a look with organizers Annabel Baker and Sue McCallum.
