The state is pulling out of an organization trying to find common ground in Southeast Alaska’s timber battles.

Governor Sean Parnell recently announced plans to withdraw from the Tongass Futures Roundtable. He’s shifting state efforts to a new timber task force that will focus on logging, not conservation.

Several dozen Petersburg residents gathered at the town’s Sandy Beach Park on Saturday for a 5-K fun run. It was part of Girls on the Run, an international self-esteem and exercise program targeting pre-teens.

The wolf-hunting season is open a month longer than usual in parts of central and southern Southeast this year because of concerns over low deer numbers.

Parents and other residents gave Petersburg schools largely positive ratings during a recent community-perception survey.

Results were recently released. They show most people feel welcome in the elementary, middle and high schools. Most also think the district has high academic standards.

Petersburg’s City Council has endorsed a plan putting the community in the same House district as Kupreanof, Wrangell and Ketchikan.
