Drunk driving consequences discussed in Petersburg tonight

The family of a teenager killed in a drunk-driving accident two years ago in Juneau will tell their story to Petersburg tonight. Carole and Kevin White started the Taylor White Foundation for Advancing our Community in memory of their son, who died in June of 2009. The foundation works with kids and parents in the hopes of preventing tragedies like the one the White family suffered. Petersburg’s volunteer fire department helped bring the foundation to town for a presentation to the community tonight. Matt Lichtenstein spoke with local EMT Kirsten Susort and Carole White herself, who described the circumstances that resulted in her son’s death.

Petersburg to hold drug-collection event Saturday

Petersburg area residents have the opportunity to safely dispose of outdated or unwanted medication this weekend. The drug-collection event is part of a statewide effort aimed at keeping prescription and over-the-counter medications from getting into the wrong hands or being dumped into the city’s wastewater. In Petersburg, there will be a table set up downtown in front of Rexall Drugs. Matt Lichtenstein spoke with Pharmacist Erica Worhatch, Police Seargent Heidi Agner, and Kiana Kegel with Petersburg Mental Health Services.

Website gives birdseye view of Alaska coastline and more

The public can now view birds-eye video and still photos of much of Alaska’s coastline on the internet. The Alaska Shorezone Coastal Habitat mapping Program’s website allows users to virtually fly along the coast at low-tide and look up biological, geographic and geological information that accompanies the imagery. The multi-agency effort covers Southeast Alaska and the Gulf as well as Kodiak, and Bristol bay. The project is aimed at supporting a variety of fields, from fishery research and community development to oil spill response and search and rescue. It could also be used by boaters, hunters or anyone else who may use detailed pictures of the Alaska coastline.
