Southeast summer Dungeness harvest the worst in decades

The commercial harvest for Dungeness crab in Southeast Alaska this summer was the lowest in several decades. Managers closed the fishery three weeks early and believe it could have been a late molt this year.

Petersburg assembly discusses additional airport parking

Petersburg’s borough assembly Monday continued a discussion about adding some parking space at the state-owned James A. Johnson airport. Short almost half of its members, the assembly made no decision on that ongoing topic. They also decided to wait on another discussion.

School board plans to vote on future maintenance projects

Petersburg School Board will meet Tuesday, at 7 p.m. in the high school library. School administrators are not back to work yet so they are not scheduled to give reports to the board nor is the finance director but there will be updates from the superintendent and maintenance director.

This is true of one of Southeast Alaska’s most iconic seasonal visitors – the humpback whale. KFSK reporter Nora Saks spent some time in the field – or in this case, on the open water, with researchers have banded together to keep a close eye on these beloved marine mammals.
