After losses to Metlakatla, PHS basketball finishes regular season against Wrangell

Petersburg High School’s basketball teams close out the regular season this weekend with homecoming games against the Wrangell Wolves. Both the boys and girls varsity teams lost two games to Metlakatla over the weekend. Both teams lost seniors to injury, Wolf Brooks for the boys and Emma Chase for the girls. After a 15-game winning streak, the Petersburg boys lost three in a row last week. The boys lost 57-49 overtime to Ketchikan on Wednesday and then lost back to back games to Metlakatla 55-33 and 54-38 Friday and Saturday.

Icicle’s new CEO says wild salmon has a place in his farmed salmon business

The CEO of farmed seafood giant, Cooke Aquaculture, says wild salmon sales can flourish in the hands of his company. The business purchased Icicle Seafoods, one of Alaska’s main seafood processors, last summer. CEO Glenn Cooke spoke at Petersburg’s Chamber of Commerce annual banquet Feb. 25.

Petersburg assembly looks at election timing change

The Petersburg borough assembly has started making changes to a local law on ballot initiatives, referendums and special elections. The changes would remove the deadline for filing ballot initiative petitions six months in advance of an election and may mean fewer special elections in the future.
