SEARHC awards healthy living grant to Petersburg Indian Association

The Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium awarded a $50,000 healthy living grant to the Petersburg Indian Association Monday night. SEARHC is a regional non-profit health care provider operating in 20 communities in Southeast Alaska. It has a 15-person board of directors representing as many communities in Southeast. The organization is awarding a “Healthy is Here” grant to tribal organizations in each of the 15 communities.

PHS track teams head to regional meet after competition in Ketchikan

Petersburg High School’s girls track team was dominant in a three-team meet in Ketchikan last weekend while the boys team was second. Ketchikan took first for the boys teams and Thorne Bay was third. For the girls Ketchikan was second, far behind a strong Petersburg team, and Thorne Bay was third.

Petersburg’s 60th Little Norway Festival Schedule

Petersburg’s 60th Little Norway Festival runs Saturday, May 12 through Sunday, May 20th with a mixture of old and new events. The celebration honors the May 17, 1814 signing of the Norwegian Constitution, the many Norwegian pioneers who settled in Petersburg a century ago as well as Armed Forces Day. Visitors and locals don Norwegian sweaters and traditional Norwegian costumes. Bands of fur-clad Vikings and Valkyries also roam the streets making sure everyone is having a fun time.

Story tellers pole at Petersburg library not following traditional protocol

The Petersburg Public Library Thursday, May 17, 2018 unveils a new outdoor carved wooden artwork that’s being called a “story tellers pole.” The piece has generated some opposition among the local Native community.

Petersburg borough budget back on track without changes

Petersburg’s borough assembly is back on track to pass a budget for the fiscal year that starts in July, after voting down the spending plan a week before. Assembly members this week voted down full funding for the museum and expanded hours at the public library but learned more about possible one-time payments for department heads.
