One man Star Wars on stage in Petersburg

Hard core fans of the Star Wars movies along with everyone who’s giggled at a line from the movies or cringed at the acting should be entertained by a one-person show Monday in Petersburg. Charlie Ross has been performing his take on the three original movies called One Man Star Wars Trilogy nearly 17 years. His act has been endorsed by Lucasfilm and he’s performed it around the globe. It’s just him, no props, for 75 minutes on the stage and Ross does all the voices and sound effects. He also pokes fun at the iconic movie series. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Ross about the show and how it came about.

Brew and stew on tap for Friday

The 12th annual Brew and Stew festival is Friday night at the Sons of Norway Hall in Petersburg. It’s sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the Petersburg Ragnarök Rollers. The roller derby team uses the event to raise money for travel and is making some changes to try and boost the turnout this year. Joe Viechnicki spoke with derby team member and organizer Heather Conn about this year’s competition.

Lobbyist not optimistic about federal payments for schools

Petersburg’s lobbyist in the nation’s capital is not optimistic about a continuation of federal payments that help fund schools and road projects in rural parts of the country, including Alaska.

Southeast pink salmon catch could disappoint again in 2018

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is forecasting a commercial catch of 23 million pink salmon in Southeast Alaska next year. That would be down from this year but would come close to historical averages. Managers are expecting something similar to the disappointing season of 2016. However, for the first time in a decade, next year’s forecast is not adjusted using survey data from outgoing young pink salmon because of unusually low numbers.

Vikings will volleyball region title, bound for state along with Wrangell Wolves

The Petersburg High School volleyball team secured the region five 2A title in front of a home crowd Saturday night. The Vikings played three matches Friday and Saturday and didn’t drop a game to Klawock, Craig and Wrangell. Both Petersburg and Wrangell will advance to the state tournament next week in Anchorage. Joe Viechnicki spoke with coach Jaime Cabral about the regional tournament and his team’s goals for the state tournament.
