Petersburg assembly OKs agreement on scrap metal shipment

Petersburg’s borough assembly Tuesday approved a preliminary agreement for shipping out recycled metal and junked vehicles. The agreement is with the giant garbage and recycling company Waste Management and is the first step to actually sending collected scrap metal and cars out of town.

Forest road on Mitkof Island near Petersburg reopens

A U.S. Forest Service road on Mitkof Island south of Petersburg has reopened this week after a contractor finished installing a new bridge. A portion of the northern end of the Three Lakes Loop Road has been closed for most of August while the bridge over Falls Creek has been replaced. It’s more than 10 miles south of downtown Petersburg. The road is used by people cutting wood, hunting, fishing or working in the forest on the central part of the island.

Petersburg woman makes indigenous derby team to compete at world cup

A Petersburg woman will be taking on some of the best skaters in the world next year at the Roller Derby World Cup in Manchester, England. 45-year-old Victoria Moore, who will go by her derby name of Victoria Deckem for the World Cup, is one of 20 skaters who made Team Indigenous Roller Derby. She’s the only Alaskan on the team, made up of First Nations and Native women from around the globe. That team will be among the 40 competing at the world cup next February.

PHS cross country opens season in Juneau

Petersburg High School’s cross country teams already have their first competition under their belts. The girls team placed second and the boys team was fifth at an invitational meet held by Juneau-Douglas High Saturday.
