Forest Service plans to withdraw Mitkof timber sale decision

The U.S. Forest Service and five environmental groups this month filed a court document signaling that agency’s intention to withdraw a decision on a timber sale on Mitkof Island near Petersburg. The groups sued the Forest Service to block that sale and are calling the planned withdrawal a victory for old growth forest and deer on Mitkof Island.

Canned salmon classic winner nets first and second

For just the second time in the contest’s history, the winner of Petersburg’s Canned Salmon Classic will take home cash prizes for both first and second place. Petersburg resident William Bergmann won first and second place prizes of $2,000 and $1,000 dollars for his guesses on this year’s canned salmon pack in Petersburg.

Recycling changes afoot in Petersburg

Changes are coming for Petersburg’s curbside recycling program. The borough this fall is asking customers to keep glass separate from the other recycled materials and will re-purpose the glass at the local landfill. Early next year the borough expects to hand out collection carts that will replace the blue plastic bags for curbside collection.
