New Southeast Alaska ferry service delayed

A new independent ferry service in Southeast Alaska is delaying the start-up of service that was planned for this weekend. The Rainforest Island Ferry was scheduled this Sunday, June 14 to start round-trip, four-day-a-week connections between Coffman Cove on Prince of Wales Island, Wrangell and Petersburg.

Mother, daughter seek lost stuffed animals left on state ferry

A mother and daughter from Petersburg are appealing for help from someone in Juneau who might know the whereabouts of two lost stuffed animals. On a June 6 ferry ride on the Matanuska from Petersburg to Sitka, Lizzie and Katie Thompson set up two stuffed animals, Piglet and Aurora, on the windowsill of the observation lounge in the ferry for a photo.

The tender Kupreanof had left Petersburg on Sunday headed to Bristol Bay to tender for Silver Bay Seafoods.

Coast guard rescues four from sinking tender

Four people are safe after their fishing tender sank off Cape Fairweather early Wednesday morning, June 10th. A helicopter from Air Station Sitka hoisted the crew of the 80-foot tender, just as the vessel rolled and sank in six-foot seas near Lituya Bay.

Petersburg’s pool to reopen Wednesday

Petersburg’s swimming pool is set to open again Wednesday, June 10th after a two-week closure forced by a wiring fire on the two boilers used to heat the facility. Parks and Recreation director Donnie Hayes said the two boilers in the aquatic center were damaged in a fire in the wiring on Tuesday, May 26.
