Petersburg Borough Assembly approves $5.7 million contract for hydroelectric upgrades

Petersburg’s Borough Assembly on Tuesday approved a 5.7 million dollar contract for upgrades to the Blind Slough Hydroelectric Power Plant. The winning bid for the contract was from MCG/ Dawson Joint Venture.

Utility Director Karl Hagerman recommended the bid and the assembly approved it unanimously. Other bids submitted were over two million dollars more. The funds will cover removal of old equipment and installation of new equipment. And Hagerman says it will include inspection.

Representative elect Rebecca Himschoot visits Petersburg for community office hours

Sitka teacher Rebecca Himschoot will take office as the District 2 House representative in the state legislature in January. District Two includes Petersburg, Sitka, Yakutat, Craig, Hoonah, Kake, and much of Southeast Alaska. Himschoot, who is an independent, will be replacing Representative Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, who held the position for ten years. Kreiss-Tomkins is a Democrat. Himschoot visited Petersburg over the holidays with Kreiss-Tomkins and held office hours to hear from residents.

Downtown Petersburg loses power for two hours

Many residents in Petersburg lost power Wednesday, December 28th, for two hours. The power went out at 3pm for all of Southeast Alaska Power Agency’s—or SEAPA—circuit 62. That includes Petersburg’s downtown, the airport, and the hospital. Power was restored within two hours.
