Pharmacists in Alaska this week are celebrating the passage of a bill making changes to prescription drug benefits and how businesses are reimbursed for that medication. The legislation was opposed by health insurers and the companies they hire to oversee pharmacy drug sales.

USFS releases draft review for Prince of Wales timber sales, projects

Some 200 million board feet of old-growth Tongass timber on Prince of Wales Island could be logged over the next 10 years. But the number could be a half to a quarter of that amount – or none at all. It depends on the option chosen by the U.S. Forest Service between now and the beginning of next year. The federal agency in April released a draft environmental review for the Prince of Wales Landscape Level Analysis kicking off a 45-day public comment period.

Village Public Safety Officer hired for Kake

For the first time in about two years, the Southeast community of Kake has a village public safety officer and is in line to get another. The rural village of about 600 residents on Kupreanof Island has had no local law enforcement presence during that time. Alaska State Troopers and Alaska Wildlife Troopers in larger Southeast communities have been the first response, sometimes hours away by plane or boat.

Medical center foundation holds annual membership meeting

A local non-profit foundation that helps with health care needs in Petersburg has its annual membership meeting this week. The Petersburg Medical Center Foundation was established in 1990 and raises money for medical equipment, scholarships and education funding for employees at the community hospital. In recent years, fund raisers like the Paddle Battle in the Narrows have paid for new wheelchairs and a shower chair at the medical center.
