Petersburg’s domestic violence advocacy organization has received some good news on the funding front. WAVE, or Working Against Violence for Everyone, has landed a three-year federal grant that will allow the organization to keep its doors open, expand its staff and pay for equipment.

The first of two large conferences planned in Petersburg this month kicked on Wednesday night. The annual meeting of the Alaska Recreation and Park Association runs through Friday with 50 parks and recreation directors or employees from around the state attending.

Searchers Wednesday night were able to find a lost middle school student near the Ravens Roost Trail outside of Petersburg. Alaska State Troopers, Petersburg Police Department and volunteers with the fire department’s Search and Rescue team joined members of the community who were out looking for 12-year-old Noah Willis. He had gone for a run around 6 p.m. Wednesday and failed to return home.

Local seniors and people with disabilities this week can learn more about their options for making their lives a little easier and accessing services that are available in the region. An employee with the Juneau office of Southeast Alaska Independent Living, or SAIL, is visiting Petersburg and meeting with clients and the public. SAIL provides help, education and outreach for hearing and vision problems, mental health needs and access, among other challenges faced by people living on their own.
