High temperatures are setting records in Southeast Alaska this week.

Petersburg’s borough assembly Monday voted down a ballot measure to change elections for assembly seats. Supporters of the change say they’re not interested in gathering signatures to put the issue on the ballot.

An air ambulance company says it has recovered the cockpit voice recorder for its plane that crashed in Southeast Alaska’s Frederick Sound in late January.

Alaska’s Board of Fisheries this month had a frank discussion over whether hatchery fish compete with natural stocks. Commercial fishermen have grown increasingly reliant on hatchery salmon but some caution about releasing millions of fish into the ecosystem without doing more research.

Property owners voiced frustration to Petersburg’s planning commission Tuesday in a sometimes contentious and heated meeting lasting over four hours. The commission this month is voting on a recommendation to the borough assembly on a new zoning map for land within the old city limits. Numerous land owners asked for their zoning to remain unchanged, or changed to a more permissive zoning classification.
