A few issues are already surfacing for Petersburg’s borough ballot in October. Local residents are hoping to vote on use of all-terrain vehicles on local streets and fluoride in Petersburg’s water supply. It looks like the ballot also could have the first change to the new borough’s charter.

Petersburg’s borough assembly Monday came out against a bill that could transfer up to two million acres of the Tongass National Forest to the state of Alaska. The bill is sponsored by Alaska Congressman Don Young and would allow states to select or purchase the forest land for logging or other uses.

People in the Petersburg area can hone their rosemaling skills or try out the technique for the first time this week with an award-winning painter and teacher visiting from Wisconsin. Rosemaling is a traditional style of Norwegian decorative painting used on anything wooden, from plates to buildings. Nancy Schmidt is teaching classes Tuesday through Saturday upstairs at the Sons of Norway Hall. She’s been teaching rosemaling for 40 years and this is her third visit to Petersburg.

Alaska Mental Health Trust Land Office representatives faced some tough questions about a proposed land exchange between the Trust and the U.S. Forest Service in Petersburg last week. The Mental Health Trust Authority owns lands in Petersburg it wants to swap for Tongass National Forest acreage elsewhere in the region. Resulting timber sales would raise money for the Trust.

Petersburg High School’s cheerleading squad closed out their season with a trip to the state competition in Anchorage last week. The state competition happens at the same time as the 3A and 4A basketball championships, instead of the basketball tournament for the smaller schools in the state.
